Laboratory of Analysis and Numerical Research in Geotechnical Engineering


The Laboratory Geotechnical Analysis and Modelling (GeoT-LAM) is particularly devoted to the study of the mechanical behaviour of geomaterials (soils, soft rocks, rock masses; granular materials in general, also with industrial applications), and of their interaction with structures, either subject to static or cyclic/dynamic/impulsive loads.

Risk mitigation against natural hazards (landslides, rockfall, earthquakes) and the influence of environmental loads (water table oscillation, seasonal variation, climate change effects) on structures and infrastructures are studied, with application also to specific fields like the stability of rock mass in high mountain areas or of tall trees in urban areas, to the safety of buried pipelines, the use of georeinforced soils.


Both experimental and numerical tools are available, with the most advanced numerical approaches (Finite Elements, Distinct Elements, meshless methods, upscaling models). Specific physical models are also developed, with particular reference to teaching purposes, within the general topic of the study of the interaction between the soil and the structure.

Ad hoc experimental tests, both with reference to small scale prototypes and real scale applications, can be designed and realized.
